Hydrogen & Innovation TheatreFree to attend

Playing a key role in decarbonising hard-to-abate industries, hydrogen has emerged as an important part of the clean energy mix needed to ensure a sustainable future. Falling costs for hydrogen produced with renewable energy, combined with the urgency of cutting greenhouse gas emissions, has given clean hydrogen unprecedented political and business momentum.

The Hydrogen and Innovation Theatre at the World Utilities Congress will host discussions on the enormous progress that has been made in the development of hydrogen, from production to storage and transportation; address crucial industry challenges and opportunities, and deliver new perspectives and key insights from policymakers, technologists, and organisations at the forefront of the hydrogen sector. The agenda will also discuss the latest technologies implemented in the power and water utilities sector and how these technologies are enabling energy transition and supporting utility companies in achieving net zero.

Hydrogen production: where are we today?

Panel discussion

There is increasing recognition of the role hydrogen can play in achieving net zero. For this to be realised, scaling-up of technology is imperative. Where are we with hydrogen production today and what existing projects are paving the way? How are we innovating to increase efficiencies and reduce costs? What new start-ups and technologies are taking centre stage? What are the future possibilities and how are we preparing to capitalise on those today?

Hydrogen starts now

Presentation

While hydrogen may be viewed as a fuel of the future, many components across its value chain have already been deployed on a small scale. Now, further investment is required for the industry to scale up and drive broad adoption.

This session will explore the latest Baker Hughes technology innovations and solutions to enable the hydrogen value chain from production to transportation and utilisation, as well as wing to wing solutions such as feasibility studies and digital integration. Case studies will be featured to illustrate how capabilities developed over more than a century in gas processing can be leveraged and are fundamental to making hydrogen a reality, starting now.

Hydrogen and ammonia detection tapes

Presentation

Hydrogen or ammonia leaks result in losses for the operators and the environment. These leaks are also considered hazardous, causing a major HSE dilemma. The Nitto DX tapes series are a great addition to any toolbox that deals with hydrogen and ammonia. It is a must-have safety apparatus which helps in detecting hydrogen or ammonia leaks. This presentation will showcase the tape in live action, and how anyone dealing with hydrogen or ammonia will benefit from such an innovative solution.

Power to Gas (PtG) – the hydrogen value chain required to support net-zero generation

Presentation

As the world’s energy producers continue the drive to Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions, the associated rapid identification and adoption to carbon-neutral power generation technologies to achieve this result is accelerating.   Renewables are providing a growing proportion of the total energy produced, with innovations in larger wind   turbines, more cost-effective Solar Photovoltaics, as well as emerging technologies like tidal power and energy storage.  To many, it is surprising to hear that the remaining grid infrastructure will continue to play a significant and integral role in delivering the generation mix today and well into the Net-Zero future.

According to BP & Ember Global Energy Report, in 2020 about 38% of global energy production was from low carbon sources and 25% of all global electricity production came from more traditional natural gas. These traditional generation assets represent tremendous untapped potential within installed base of gas turbines to retrofit them with advanced technology combustion systems to reduce carbon emissions to maximize existing asset value, while supporting long-term decarbonization goals far into the future.

This presentation focuses on the colours of hydrogen, the technology, practicality, and challenges to building a Hydrogen value chain, as well as a high-level summary of the technical challenges faced when combusting Hydrogen in a gas turbine.

Challenges and opportunities for hydrogen transport, distribution and storage solutions

Panel discussion

Hydrogen is already widely used in some industries but has not yet realised its potential to support the clean energy transition. As a low-density fuel, hydrogen is complex and expensive to transport. What will it take for hydrogen transportation and storage to become cost efficient? Is seasonal storage a potential solution? How can we overcome shortage of fuelling stations? Can batteries or fuel cells fill the gaps? What can be done to overcome storage and transportation infrastructure challenges? What are the opportunities for the industry in the coming 5 – 10 years?

Developing the workforce of the future to deliver exceptional customer experiences and drive the utilities industry transformation

Panel discussion

The utilities sector is undergoing an accelerated transformation which should allow for the creation of modern, multi-utility companies capable of delivering customer-focused products and services going beyond commodities. It can only be achieved if utilities win the minds and hearts of their customers while delivering a great experience. Loyal customers will create long-lasting value for the company. At the same time, utilities need to acquire, develop and retain young talents who will form the ‘workforce of the future’, the future of utilities companies. That’s why it is so important to put focus and efforts on delivering great employee and customer experience simultaneously, rather than in two separate silos as it usually happens.

How drone data streamlines solar power plant commissioning

Presentation

When it comes down to commissioning solar power plants, it is always a nail-biting experience; even more so for an engineer generating and reviewing inspection reports. Depending on the size of the plant, the number of faults found can even range in the tens of thousands! We will explore our findings from a recent solar panel inspection for the plant commissioning and how we processed and generated reports from about 55,499 images in just 15 days and highlighted about 20,000 faults.

Innovative outcome-based solutions for energy and emissions optimisation in complex industrial assets

Presentation

The energy industry is shifting its focus from a piece of single equipment to all the industrial assets concerning their emissions and efficiency profile with the aim to minimise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption, leveraging domain expertise, high-fidelity design-based digital twins and process predictive analytics as well as Artificial Intelligence and machine learning techniques.

Baker Hughes, starting from single sources of expertise (OEM, condition monitoring industry knowledge, AI) from the oil and gas heritage is now defining and fostering a Digital Services Framework, where an outcome-based approach for emissions and energy efficiency can be deployed in industrial and utilities’ complexes, achieving 2-3% improvements related to global plant efficiency.

Automation solution for the complete water cycle

Presentation

As the world's population continues to grow, so does the demand and consumption of water, a vital resource. This makes it even more important to treat water after use to a quality that makes it available for use again. This requires increasingly sophisticated, effective processes, which at the same time must be implemented and carried out as economically as possible.

This presentation will share insights in overcoming water treatment challenges with automation solutions that are as reliable as they are innovative. In doing so, we always keep an eye on current requirements, but also on what will be possible tomorrow, so that security and sustainability are guaranteed in equal measures
